Elderly

The Elderly

The physiology of the elderly is different to that of an adults. As we age, our bodies undergo changes in their normal bodily processes. Unfortunately, this means we become more sensitive to side effects, are given complicated medication regimens and sometimes can’t find strengths low enough to address these issues. Other times, tablets or capsules are so large and difficult to swallow, you would think they were made for horses!

East Coast Compounding addresses these problems through:

  • Creating various, normally unavailable medication strengths
  • Changing dosage forms to liquids or creams (We have a huge selection of flavours and hypoallergenic bases)
  • Combine medications for easier dosing
  • Minimising side effects by using medication applied to the skin, rather than taken orally

Case Studies

The Problem

Kylie’s mum, Jane, recently had a stroke and has great difficulty swallowing her large medication (dysphagia). This can lead to issues such as Jane not wanting to take her medication or crushing medication that normally shouldn’t be crushed.

The East Coast Solution

Through compounding, her doctor was able to prescribe her large tablets as liquids that could easily be measured by Kylie and given to her mother, Jane. We are also able to offer Jane a wide variety of flavours to mask the taste of certain medications.

Jane is now able to safely and easily have her normal medications that have always worked for her rather than changing over to a new, confusing regimen all together.

The Problem

Margaret, an elderly lady with very painful nerve pain in her foot was given medication to help reduce her pain.

Unfortunately, the side effects from the medication cause her extreme drowsiness. She feels uncomfortable driving and stays at home almost every day feeling like a zombie. This is also dangerous as she could have slipped or fallen whilst drowsy, leading to injuries.

Even though her pain had reduced significantly, Margaret felt down because she couldn’t go out visit friends and family.

The East Coast Solution

Margaret’s compounding pharmacist at East Coast Compounding suggested to her doctor that the formulation be changed to one that could be applied the skin.

She was told to apply the medication to the lower region of her spine. This meant that the medication was able to block the pain signal before it was able to reach the brain and give the sensation of pain.

Because the medication wasn’t taken orally, Margaret noticed a reduction in her drowsiness, but her pain was still well managed.

Margaret’s now able to drive around visiting friends and family without any issues!
